  15. The author of the annexed crude production has no better apology
  16. to offer for his extreme assurance in presenting it to the public
  17. than a statement of the facts which explain its conception.

  19. A short time before the actual breaking out of the present war, the
  20. Virginia Historical Society honored him with a request that be
  21. would prepare, for the sake of historic reference, a brief chronicle
  22. of what was termed the "Harper's Ferry Rebellion."

  24. This was at once acceded to; but absence from this country, to
  25. which he returned but a few months prior to the commencement of
  26. hostilities, prevented more than a partial completion of his
  27. engagement when a higher duty called him to the field. Since that
  28. time, until recently, he has had no opportunity of prosecuting the
  29. work which he had undertaken, and the difficulties of which were
  30. greatly increased by the destruction of his original manuscript and
  31. material by Patterson's soldiers. Lately, taking advantage of a
  32. furlough which a slight wound obtained, the writer recommenced
  33. the task which he had engaged to perform.

  35. Becoming interested in a subject, an investigation of which
  36. disclosed so much which related to the causes and objects of the
  37. present war, he has somewhat enlarged upon his first plan and
  38. indulged in a slight glance at some of the interesting features of
  39. the second as well as the first rebellion against the majesty of an
  40. established compact.

  42. Hoping, in the language of all authors, that the Confederacy and
  43. mankind may derive no little blessing from this effort of his
  44. genius, he beseeches the compassion a generous public.
